Top 5 Communication Apps on Android in South Africa Q4 2021

The fourth quarter of 2021 saw interesting trends in the performance of the top 5 communication apps on the Android platform in South Africa. According to Sensor Tower data, WhatsApp Messenger, MoyaApp, Snapchat, Truecaller: AI Call Blocker, and My Vodacom SA demonstrated varying performance in terms of downloads, revenue, and active users.

WhatsApp Messenger maintained a strong presence with weekly downloads peaking at around 84K in early October and showing a slight decline towards the end of the quarter, closing at approximately 66K. Weekly active users remained robust, fluctuating between 15.8M and 16.2M throughout the quarter.

MoyaApp experienced significant fluctuations in weekly downloads, starting at around 98K in late September, dipping mid-quarter, and then rising again to about 88K in mid-December. Active users showed a similar trend, peaking at approximately 240K in mid-December before dropping to around 158K by the end of the quarter.

Snapchat saw a relatively steady download rate, with highs of around 54K in early October and late December. Active users showed an upward trend, starting at approximately 1.95M and peaking at around 2.12M by mid-December. Revenue for Snapchat was minimal, with a slight increase to $8 in the final two weeks of December.

Truecaller: AI Call Blocker had a notable performance in terms of revenue, peaking at roughly $20K in late October. Downloads fluctuated, peaking at about 50K in mid-October and declining to around 27K by the end of December. Active users remained relatively stable, ranging from 2.87M to 3.02M throughout the quarter.

Lastly, My Vodacom SA showed a varied download trend, peaking at around 54K in mid-October and dropping to about 24K by the end of December. Active users saw an increase towards the end of the quarter, rising from approximately 367K in late September to around 504K in mid-December.
